Kazakhstan Top Division 1996 was the fifth edition of Kazakhstan Premier League. [1]
Promotion and relegation of 1995 season
Three new teams were accepted to the league
No team was relegated at the end of last season:
however FC Gornyak withdrew at the start of this season
Club name changes
At the start of season:
FC Tsesna became FC Tselinnik again,
FC Ansat became FC Irtysh,
FC Aktyubinets became FC Aktobemunai
League Format
It was decided to increase the number of teams from 16 to 19. With a withdrawal of FC Gornyak it became 18. Teams played against each other on home-away basis.

Pld = Matches played; W = Matches won; D = Matches drawn; L = Matches lost; GF = Goals for; GA = Goals against; GD = Goal difference; Pts = Points
- FC Gornyak withdrew after round 4. Results: Munaishy 2:0 Gornyak, Gornyak 0:1 Aktobemunai, Yenbek 0:1 Gornyak, Gornyal 0:1 Kairat were annulled.
- FC Kokshe withdrew after round 19. Later games were recognized as technical loss (0:3)
